When I first saw an OLED TV panel at CES a few years ago, it was a bright, beautiful object to behold. It was at the Sony booth in 2007 and they were showing off the first 11-inch OLED television.
OLED TV’s have come a long way since then. At this past CES, we saw OLEDs in the 50-inch range from Sony, Samsung and LG.
Now, Samsung has brought to market its curved 55-inch OLED TV with a price tag of $9,000. Though the price is still out of reach of the average consumer, it seems a relative bargain compared to where prices were just a few years ago. And it’s a few thousand dollars less than competitor LG’s curved OLED TV.
The OLED (organic light-emitting diode) panel can be bent, which is what creates this curved experience. The theory is it’s easier to see the screen from a wider range of seating positions.
Samsung’s new KN55S9C TV is, of course, a Smart TV, meaning you can use the Smart Hubs and recommendations as well as the Smart Evolution Kit announced earlier this year.
For those who can’t agree on the night’s entertainment, the TV includes Samsung’s Multi-View feature, letting two people watch two different programs in full HD at the same time.
Both viewers need to be wearing the company’s compatible 3D Active glasses which include stereo earphones. With the glasses on, you see only your show, and since the picture quality is so advanced, and the colors so vibrant, you become truly immersed in it. Which kind of defeats the idea of sitting and watching TV together, doesn’t it?
Consumer Reports has already done a review of the set, and says “We were wowed by the seemingly effortless, accurate reproduction of high-definition programs and movies viewed on Samsung’s OLED set.”
