Over 30 Need Not Apply

May 3, 2011 By Andrea Smith 1 Comment

I was stopped dead in my web tracks when I stumbled upon a job posting for a Web Show Co-Host on Revision3.  http://revision3.com/jobs#cohost

They’re looking for an “on-camera, female co-host,  passionate about gadgets, technology and entertainment.”  Hmmm, I already have a kick-ass, great job but, like everyone else, I always like to look to see what’s out there.  This looked interesting so I read more.

“Must be web savvy, great on camera, with an engaging voice.” Well, I’ve been on network TV for a few years now, so that might qualify me for this. But oh wait…never mind!

“Must be 20 to mid-30 in age.” Wow! Count me out, then. But, isn’t that illegal? I mean, if you’re looking for an entertainer, as one colleague  points out, you can certainly ask for any age you want, but if you’re looking to fill a job, I believe age is not allowed to be a discriminating factor in the decision-making. And I have to wonder if they would do the same if they were looking for a male co-host.

Now, I understand Revision3 is a hip, trendy internet destination with shows like Hak5 and Bytejacker and so they cater to a younger audience, but outright advertising for someone of a certain age range? Isn’t that kind of like saying, don’t worry about experience, we just want to make sure you’re perky and enthusiastic and we can show you the rest? Does experience and industry knowledge not count for anything?

And I’m frankly surprised because Tekzilla co-host Veronica Belmont is both supersmart, engaging and an experienced tech personality. And a really nice person; I’ve met her many times. She worked at CNET TV before going over to Revision3, and is an expert on gaming and technology. I have no idea how old she is, but I wonder when they decided to turn away from experienced professionals in favor of an open call for females of a certain age with no experience necessary, only the ability to look good on camera.

What do you think of this?

Yes, it’s illegal to inquire about a job applicant’s age; that’s age discrimination. It’s also gender discrimination to insist on female candidates for a job that a man could handle equally well.
    And FYI, Veronica Belmont’s 28.
