Last night I went to the launch party for HTC’s HD2 Windows Mobile phone. For some reason, the theme was Mr. Potato Head, haven’t quite been able to figure that out yet.
In any case, I got some hands-on time with the phone.
It includes 3G, GPS, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.1.
The phone includes a 5-megapixel camera, runs on Qualcomm’s 1GHz processor and didn’t feel as bulky as the Droid in my hands. The devices comes with 576MB of memory and includes a MicroSD card slot for expandable storage, always a good thing.
You can purchase it unlocked for $449, or for $199 with a 2-year contract through T-Mobile.
I saw a few of the apps on the phone. The HTC HD2 will be pre-loaded with a new Barnes & Noble eBook reader application that will pair with a pre-existing or new Barnes & Noble account for ebook purchases. I also watched a little bit of ABC News Now on the MobiTV streaming video service. The quality was clear, sharp, not choppy, even given the fact we were inside with hundreds of others using the wireless, and of course my AT&T phone didn’t work in there.
Alas, the phone runs on Windows 6.5 and there are no plans in place to put Microsoft’s upcoming Windows Phone 7 OS on the device-yet.
